Hello everyone. Welcome to Hey Michelle with a mic. Um, a little bit about me. I um am a blogger that writes about bars, restaurants, fun things to do in the Tri-State Cincinnati area and travel. Um, and I started my podcast bringing in good people with great stories. And today I have Stephanie with constantly curious. And we've known each other because we kind of um I say constantly consistently. I'm okay. Consistently, that's constantly, but you are constantly curious, you know. So that's fair. And I knew that the minute I said that's not right. But it's okay. We do we've done some blog events together and things like that. And I love her page, and she has so much fun stuff to share, and she travels everywhere and does great little trips. And I thought for the summertime, this is perfect for everyone trying to plan weekend getaways and fun trips.

Oh, yes. Everybody calls me the weekend getaway queen from Cincinnati because I have so many great areas that are all under four hours, under three hours, and even within an hour. There's so much to do in our city, like around our city, um, just in our neighboring states. And some might surprise you too. What is actually so close to us? I know.

Well, sometimes you post things, I'm like, where is that now? So I'll look it up and it's it like you said, it's so close. Now you have a daughter.

I do. She just turned nine yesterday, and she will never let you forget it. Um I love her. Nine going on 19 with 40 minutes. So, yes, and she's my travel buddy. Um, and then of course, my husband, he is along for the ride. All right, I'm sure he loves it. He gets all these. He's a foodie. So he we he kind of deals with the foodie end of things, making sure we're always eating well.

Oh, wherever you go. Now tell me first, how did you even start this venture?

SPEAKER_00 1:47

So actually, it started when my daughter was born. Um, I struggled a lot with terrible postpartum depression. And um, one of the things my daughter, my doctor recommended is journaling. So, oh, you should journal. And all my friends are like, You're finding these cute places. Write about them and share them with us. And so I thought, well, I'll just do like a little journal where I'm like taking pictures and I'll post it on Instagram and just tell people this is where it is. Well, it took off and it took off in ways I never would have imagined. Um, and I've always loved to travel ever since I was little. And um, now I, you know, you start when you have kids, it's kind of harder just to go further abroad and stuff. So we started doing like little weekend trips, and that has just become our thing. And then we have traveled abroad with our daughter now, and um, we love cruising, we love going everywhere. So um, we have tons of great recommendations and spots we can are happy to share.

Well, yeah, so you were just saying your daughter just got out of school at the end of May, and you've been on how many at least five different little weekend getaway IAs already.

We're seven summers in one, and we're not even mid-June yet. I'm like, girl, you don't even know how you have it.

I am jealous. I mean, my gosh, she has quite a passport, local and oh my goodness. That'd be kind of fun. Little passport thing for her, a little stamp thing for her. I like that. Yeah, so tell me where, okay, so let's start. Where have you where have you been recently that you want to shout out? Tell us some great little, maybe some road trips that we can take for the summer and explore our great area.

Of course, I think my favorite one that we do every year and it grows and grows is to Holiday World in Santa Claus, Indiana. Okay, when you think of Holiday World, literally think of lands that are themed to holidays. So you'll walk into Christmas and they're playing Christmas music. The rides are themed to Christmas. You can get Christmas cookies. Um, then you walk into Halloween and it changes. It's Halloween music. The swings have like vampires and witches on them. Um, you go into Thanksgiving and there's turkey whirl and turkey shoot, and there's a roller coaster that's a gravy boat. Um, it's incredible. And the oh my gosh, and it's called good gravy. Oh my love it. And when you get off the ride, they're like, Happy Thanksgiving. Oh, you get your turkey leg in Thanksgiving. But the big thing that our kids also love is they have a huge water park. And I'm gonna, I'm gonna say it, but it puts King's Islands to shame. Seriously. It puts King's Islands to shame. Okay. Um, we love it. They have they have tons of water roller coasters. They have the largest water coaster in the world called the Mammoth. Serious. Um, it's incredible. So yeah, my tip is if you're going with kids, it's worth the money, get a cabana. Um, because that way you have somewhere to go where they can rest and just it has a fan, it has curtains, and you can just, you know, you can take a nap there if you have little ones. It is worth the money. But now that my child is nine, non-19, she does not do that. We are on the go constantly, but we still enjoy getting the cabana because it's just nice to have a place everyone can gather. So, what started as just me and my family going has now grown to about a group of 35. Oh, jeez. Um, and it's become an annual tradition. And the kids look forward, they start asking around Christmas time when are we going to holiday world? Um, so right next door is a campground called Lake Rudolph, and you can ring cabins there. Lake Rudolph. Lake Rudolph. The whole town of Santa Claus is themed to Christmas. There's Santa's all around. You can get your picture taken. You can go to um all sorts, there's like a Christmas museum where you can write letters to Santa and they will write back and you get it at Christmas time. Oh my god. A letter from Santa back. Um, you can go to get the frozen hot chocolate at the Candy Castle. Santa's Candy Castle. That is another one. My daughter took her first sip, and she's like, I've waited all year for this. No drama going over that. Like, it is the best thing she's ever had, and the kids are all like, This is heaven. Um then we ended up doing, and this has just evolved over the years, is each each family that comes gets a cabin and we get a holiday. And you decorate the cabin for the holiday. Oh my gosh. And you bring an item to the holiday potluck. That is genius. So the kids take great pride in picking their holiday. And um, we were St. Patrick's Day this year, and we're gonna be Mardi Gras next year. So gosh, you already have it. Oh, they're already planning, it is planned way in advance. So pretty much as soon as we're done, the next one is booked. I know. Because they love it so much. Now, how far is that from here? It's about three hours. Okay, three hours. Is that enough to like you need to stay the night, I would say. It's it's not enough, I would say you at least want to stay one night. Right. Um, but for us, it sounds worth it. It's totally worth it. And for us, we realize staying two nights with kids because after a whole day at the at the amusement park, you're tired and you don't want to drive three hours home. Yeah. Um, we did it once and we're like, we're not doing that again. And so now we say two nights at Lake Rudolph. And um, there's other cottages and stuff like that.

All that sounds complex. I I've heard of Santa Claus, Indiana, and I knew the concept, but I had no idea it had all that. So that is super cute. I love it. Okay, so tell us tell us some more. Let's go. Let's go hit the road. Where are we going next?

Let's see. We also went up to Kalahari, which is Ohio's largest indoor water park. Okay, now where is this? In Sandusky. Oh, yeah.

So, like a lot of times also, Bay area, like all that. Okay.

Put in Bay area, all that. Um, and we all I can go into that too because Port Clinton's up there that has the drive-thru safari, which is really fun. Okay. Um and then, of course, you can, I mean, people don't even realize Ohio has islands. So it does. I know, and it has islands, and they're great to visit. So they're really fun. Um, I would actually, I mean, kids like it, but I also think that is more of an adult. I agree. I if you're gonna go go during the day, get a golf cart, drive around, make sure you're back on the other end, probably by five.

Well, that used to be my family trip on Fourth of Jolly weekends, my growing up. So I do know it is party our we have a lot of memories and and not things we remember from a trip of next.

It is it is a great time. It is a very good time. But if you have a toddler you're trying to get, I don't recommend that. Um, I recommend crossing back on the ferry and getting you um into your nice hotel or Airbnb. Yes. Um, so yeah, uh, so we did Kalahari for a night. Um that my daughter loves that. Do they have that um after Marmal Day? The outdoor water park opens up. And so we go up there and um she we go with her cousins and it's just a good time. Okay. Um and then we kind of hang out um kind of in the area. You can do a bunch of different like cedar points up there. Oh true. Um and if you have a Kings Island pass, if you got into the where you can get into Cedar Point for free now, that's that's a bonus. So I would highly, if you're planning on that trip, yeah, tack that on too if you got the pass. Right. So, but we we really enjoy going up there. Um, for a more low-key, um, I would almost say multi-gen travel destination. Um, a lot of people like Lakeside Chautauqua. Um, it's kind of a community, it's like a gated community. Um, but it's you can rent um rooms there, you can rent um cottages there, but just know like there's um it's more family-oriented, more faith-based as well. So you're gonna see um there's no like there's churches there where you can go to church, there's um restaurants, but there's also like it's immediately on Lake Erie. So you can go and take sailing classes, you come play um shuffleboard, it's a golf cart community. So they even have shuttles that take you to like the community center that has the big pool. Um, it's just a little bit more low-key that I think um some people might enjoy as an alternative to now.

I think you said you oh, recently you went near like Rabbit Hash, which I think is a fun.

Yes, Rabbit Hash is so fun. So we um stayed. There's a new glamping dome um complex that also has glamping tents that have like a slide attached to them, and the kids just love all that. Oh wow, and they're like air conditioned. That's a very important thing. That's how I can't. It has a flush toilet, running water, and actually it's really luxurious. I would say like when I'm walked in, I'm like, this was not what I was expecting. They have like a kitchen, like a small kitchenette where you can cook. They have like pots and pans, and so we like made dinner there, and um, it's right outside the arc encounter. So for families looking like to experience that this year, that might be a good spot to like call home base. Okay. Because then we um you're about 20, 25 minutes from Big Bone Lick Steak Park, which I cannot recommend. More as a day trip, spend some time there. There's a campground there too. So if you are into RVing or tent camping, I would highly recommend looking into that campground. Okay, and then you're right by Rabbit Hash, Rabbit Hash in that area. I think 11 minutes away from black. So then you can kind of go down, like grab lunch at Rabbit Hash. I highly recommend that. And there's like a little restaurant down there, the old general store. Um that is new or the old new general store after burnt down. Yeah, um, but you're right on the river, and it's really it's just a super cool little spot that I think is quite a hidden gym.

And and good history. Yeah. Yeah. Very much. Okay, now where I know, I think you've been to the place with the big um like wood, wooden guys, like the big Oh, the trail.

Where are all those? That's in Dayton. Okay, I thought so. So Dayton, I think, is such an underrated destination for Cincinnatians that are looking for great day trips or even a weekend getaway because there's so much to do up there. And I still have a list, probably at least a mile long of things I want to do in Dayton. Um, but one of the big ones is you had to go to the Air Force Museum, which is so great.

If you've not been there or taken your kids, that was a field trip for my kids in grade school, and it is quite a gem. I mean, and that is the history of flight, right? Is in Dayton.

So that is really cool. Absolutely. And fun fact, I learned there's an aviation trail with a passport that you can get, and it takes you all throughout Ohio's aviation. And if you go to all of them, you get a little stuffed bare.

I love that. And there's just like you say, there's so much, like there's like one of the right flyers is in um one of the parks up there. And you can easily, there's just so much to do. We so we always have a troll day every summer where you go. They treat me, they look so cute. And then we go to the troll pub. So now you're thinking now you've got to be a few. Oh, okay, they do. Okay. I kind of wondered what okay. So they do, so the kids like that. I mean, and it's basic fare, like if you're not looking at anything fancy, it's burgers and stuff like that. Like, but the kids love it, so we tend to do that. Then we have our Air Force Day. We'll go up for that. Because I mean, honestly, that is a day. Yes. Like, if you're going to Air Force Museum, that is your day. It is for massive hangers with tons of walking. So that is the other bring strollers, make sure you are prepared with water bottles and snacks. Um, they do have a cafe there, but I would just make sure, like, if you're trying to get through all the hangers, you don't want to have to stop midway to like have to like oh because you can go through the airplanes, and then I know there's another specific plane that I'm totally blanking, like something really super cool.

I don't know, presidential plane or something.

Yeah, they have JF, JFK's just cave. I was presidential. Yeah, it's so neat to walk through those. That's exactly um you go into the like um aircraft, not the aircraft carriers, um the big planes that have that are on aircraft carriers, the cargo planes. You can walk inside the cargo plane. So many just really unique things. They have like a mock of the space shuttles, you can see the missiles. Um is just so neat, all the things. And the kids, they just, you know, they just get taken away that this was like, oh, this like I'm like, this is what planes used to look like.

Like they didn't have TVs and the right. Well, it's a bonus because that the parents are as entertained or intrigued with this visit as are the kids. So that's always a good one.

Every time I go, I learn something new. I feel like every time I feel I'm seeing something new, I'm learning something new. So the troll area, where is that ending? That um, so that's more um north date. So um I would almost make that your own because it also has a farm attached to it and the preserve. Also, fun fact if you have a nature center museum, um nature center pass, you can get into the um Allwood, I think it's Abdu, I can't ever say it correct. Abdu Autumn or something. Sure. That's but you can get it. It sounds all right. I'm like, I totally butcher it every time. I can't ever spell it right when I'm trying to type it. It's always like not an autocorrect on that one either. I'm like, I keep checking, I'm like, I know I spelled it wrong, and no matter how many times, I always spell it wrong. Um, so I just call it Allwood. There you go. There you go. So yeah, we usually do that because we usually spend a few hours there um because they actually have like a farm where there's animals and um different, just tons of different activities. It's kind of split into two parts. So you're like you have the troll bow that has the wings and the troll nest in one half, and then you have um the other two trolls on the other end.

So and these are just giant woods.

If you've never seen these, they're just giant wood trolls, huge, huge, and there's a story behind all of them, which is I'm not gonna give it away because I don't know. You have to read it yourself, okay? But there's a story behind all of it, and I mean you can always get online and read it. That's like reading a menu before you go to a restaurant. Because it's so neat, and they were all created out of um reused material, repurposed material, and eventually they all fade back into nature. Oh yeah. So that's the goal that it will just eventually go back. Yes.

So do your husband and yourself ever get to go away on your own?

SPEAKER_00 15:26

How you do you do so on occasion, on rare occasion, we will go away on occasion. Um, usually we are more of the folks in the camp of um, like we love going down the Louisville. Louisville's fun. I've done Louisville trips before for them. Yeah, I was gonna say it's only an hour and a half away. So easy. It's easy if you love bourbon. My husband does.

So well, and I, you know, you try to do the bourbon trail, which is really hard to navigate because um you have to take a tour to taste the bourbon.

And they close at like three and to take the tour takes half your day. So you're not hitting, like everybody thinks they're hitting like four, you know, distilleries in one day. It's hard, and then you have to get a bus because you know, whatever. It's a lot. But in Louisville, on that main drag, they have a mini of each distillery, and and you can just pop in and out of those, and it's super fun. And they all have a cute bar, like a really cute bar. Like really cool. So you can do many little little tours there and hop, and you can hop around, you can hope big time in downtown, and then the Bat Museum is right across from all those. So I always tell people if you really want to do the bourbon trail, like it's like the Cliff Notes.

It is the Cliff Notes first. It's the bourbon trail. It truly is. But it's when you're trying to get it all in because the other thing is the distilleries people don't realize are 40 minutes apart. That's the most you can't do from one to the other to the other in a day. If you want to do the whole bourbon trail, you're looking at four to five days to do it. Absolutely. Absolutely. Like if you wanted to do it. Um, but for people who wanted a taste of the bourbon trail on their way in, maybe to Louisville or Bardstown, um, go to Buffalo Trace because they offer free tours. Yes. And free to such a great which is such a great um, I mean, area to do. You can also always rock walk around the property. They just opened their restaurant back up. I saw that. I need to go check that out. I have when we were there, it was not open yet. But just open, I think. Just literally. I was gonna say, I think it just opened like two weeks ago or something. But I love going there too, because I think that's a great starting point, like a jumping point for someone that's looking to get into bourbon without because a lot of times you do have to reserve your tours way in advance. Um, and even with Buffalo Trace, you'll want to reserve your free tour, or if you wanted to do um something more like um detailed, like they have all sorts of different tastings and stuff that do cost some if you wanted to dive into that. But I mean, a lot of other places you have to reserve months in advance to get on that tour. And it costs any, you know, it can cost 20, it can cost 40, it can cost $50. But Buffalo Trace, I think, is the best for bourbon beginners. Yes, there you go.

Another one I like is like Castle and Key. I think that's a great that's so pretty. I love that place. And they do the gins and like floral botanical gins and things like that too. They do all kinds of stuff at Castle and Key, and that is a cute place. It is, and I'm a gin girl, not necessarily a bourbon girl.

So they get when we go on the bourbon trail, they have a driver. Yes, and it's me. Well, that's key, isn't it? Driver, by the way, on the bourbon trail.

I'm the because I do not like bourbon, but if we're stopping at Castle and Key, then I'm getting me a bottle of gin for when I get home. There you go. Because their gin is incredible. That is so um, I would highly recommend it.

And Lil Verley has also really cute um little museum in the shop. In there is really good. And I learned my last time there. It's the home of the song Happy Birthday. Lilville is. I did not know that. And the disco ball. Oh, uh-huh. Fun facts. Fun facts right now. You do. I do now.

Yes, they do. They have a little uh a cute little like a contemporary art museum, and then next door is like right where that car is. We've seen the car on the side. You probably sat in it. Inside there, they have all that scoop. Oh yes, and we took a uh a walking tour um home of the homes, which was really cool too, because you learn a lot about just how they how they design their homes there, and there's some really pretty areas for sure.

We did their well, we did a walking tour, but it was for food. Well, yeah. I love it. We did their food tours down there. The tours are great. It's so nice, and we we really enjoyed that. Um, what else did we do? We just did the zip lining through the cave at the mega caverns. Okay. We're in Louisville. In Louisville, and we just did Churchill Downs for the first time. Which is so neat, which was so neat. And so, of course, I had to get my mint jewel up once I'm sitting there sharing the horses. We did not go for like Derby Day, but we went for the family day. So but it was fun. But the mega caverns, um, that was my first time doing that with the zip liney and um, and it's so neat, they've done such a great job with it. Um, my daughter went with us this time, and so she loved that. Very good. Um, but I was gonna say, I know when we go with my husband's, I have such a great food scene too down there. So there's so many great restaurants. Yes. We stayed at the Galt House. The gold house was fun, yes, iconic down there. Um we saw the Belle Louisville take off. Like if you guys are if anybody's into like steamboats, they have a dinner cruise and a sunset cruise as well.

So yeah. All right, all right, where are we going next? I feel like we're just like working on a map here.

Well, let's see. Um one of my favorite destinations um for families and um couples or adventure travels is don't forget West Virginia is closer to us than we think. Yes. So three hours away, about three and a half, you will be in Charleston, West Virginia. Okay, and that is a fun city for um couples, for kids. There's so much to do there, and you're so close to so many incredible hiking trails. And um, if you wanted to keep going, go a little bit further to New River Gorge, um, which is a national park. And that has like the iconic bridge that you can walk under and have whitewater rafting and tons of beautiful hiking trails. So um that is one that I always like, I think is kind of I always forget about Virginia being as close as it is because I always think Kentucky, Indiana. Um, but West Virginia is not that far. Right. No, that's uh that's yeah, three, three and a half hours, and they also have the Rail Explorers where they have like, have you seen um where you're like on the the bike that you pedal on the um I guess it's abandoned railroad track that they've taken and now it's like a scenic way to see it's funny, um see parts of West Virginia, and so that's down there too. And we did that and that was a blast. We had so much funny until it rained. When it rains, rain always getting in the way of things. When it rains, not as fun, but when it was not raining, absolutely an amazing right. So have you done Red River Gorge?

I have they are there, you know, that is such they there's just so much to do there, and so many.

Areas, it's huge, it's huge, and that is another great like I mean, it's not that far away, but it feels like you're in somewhere completely different. Yes, um, so much different landscape. They have the beautiful natural bridge down there, Miguel's Pizza. Love that's right. Everybody talked about Gail's Pizza. That's funny. Love Miguel's, so you yeah, and then we did the glow kayaking tour. I want to do that. That's on my list of things to do. So cool. It's so neat. Um, it's different. It's not as um, how can I word it? You're not like in like cave cavernous. Because it looks like that when you're looking at the pictures, it looks like that. It's actually an old quarry, like a limestone quarry mine. So you're still like in a cave and they have like a tiny waterfall, but don't expect like dramatic landscapes in there. It's just really neat because I like seeing all the boats lit up and they're kind of telling you the history behind the mine and how now it's like it is turning into like a natural cave and stuff like that. But yeah, it's actually really neat to hear the behind the scenes of that. Um, and that was when I did with just girlfriends. We did not take my other to Red River Gorge. Yes. Um, she does, she's um, her and my husband both are not huge hikers. So whenever I want to do a hiking trip, I ditch them. I ditch them completely. I'm like, goodbye. I'm leaving you.

Well, um that's fun. Those are good, uh, like hawking hills, all this what those are all good for um, you know, little girls, girls' trips.

Oh my goodness, and hockey hills is a gem. It really is. If people haven't been up there yet, I mean you can do that in a day trip, even if you wanted to, because it's only about two hours away. But um, if you rise up early, get up there, um, go to old man's cave, ash cave. They're just incredible because it truly, you don't think you're in Ohio.

Not at all when you're literally, you know, I go to Colorado often, and you when you go to those hikes, you feel like you're in the mountains. Yes. I and great. So many people have done such good, great cottages, and you just the escapes, it is really cool. I keep seeing more and more. Somebody is supposed to want to like a spa kind of oh, there's like so much, whatever you want. Spa, kind of a very rustic but super cool looking, and you know, yoga and all that.

Oh my goodness. Whatever you're looking for in a cabin, you can find up there. I mean, there's everything from the tiny houses to like monster lodges to Pokemon themed to Harry Potter themed. Oh if you were looking for it, they have it. Um everything in between. Um, we stayed out, like they had the Hobbit houses up there too. Um, that was really fun. We actually stayed in those outside fun. That was cute. Um, we liked those a lot. Um, we went in the dead of winter, so and it was freezing.

I've done winter, and which you know, I mean it's cool, but it's it's kind of cool. It's really neat and like hot tubs outside and the waterfalls, it's really pretty.

It's actually one of my favorite times to visit Hawking Hills. Summer, I don't like as much because it's so hot and monkey outside and crowded. Yeah. So um, my favorite time to visit is the fall when the colors are ablaze. That's just one of my beautiful times. But I also like winter, that is one of my top winter getaways. I recommend to people because it's so pretty. No, just come prepared for the trails. It could be icy and things like that.

But and you can get lost.

And like yes, it's very can Lee. You gotta you kind of have to know where you're going. Exactly. So but it's a great, but you know, in the summer you can rent pontoon boats and stuff for the lake up there. And it's, I mean, so that's a great way to cool off. Just get your hiking done early or in the evening. Don't go in the heat of the day because it's miserable.

So, what's your furthest, like your furthest destination um trip that you've done, like flying? Like you're out of you go out of the country.

Oh, yeah. We took we took the family to Venice, Italy. We did the whole Asian coast. Oh my gosh, I love Venice. Um we did it, we did um Spain. So we've gone to Barcelona with the family. Um, we've done Costa Rica. Um we've kind of gone all over. Um, we um now for myself personally, I've done more of Europe than my with the family. Like we've we have family in Germany, so I've done to go family Germany, which is probably one of Germany, yeah.

I think it all depends on what they like to do. Yes. Because if you're looking just to like get away with no stress, no anything, I mean, bad hawking hills with those cabins so close to home. Um, if you're looking for the lake, um, you know, look at um Buckeye Lake up in um by Columbus. There's okay, I was just gonna say, you know, Columbus, that's a that's a day trip or a good weekend trip. And that's also a good couple's getaway, too. There's so many nice hotels up there. I mean, you got the brewdog hotel if you're into beer, like if you got a couple that's into beer, what a great getaway that is. And then hit the Columbus Breweries. Um, you know, if you're more into hiking, go up to Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Um, that's gorgeous. And they have the scenic railway, they have tons of like great little Airbnbs and stuff all through there that you can just snuggle up to. Um, Cleveland is another great thing.

And I feel like that's a good summer spot. It is. And even one of my favorites for couples too. If you like wine, don't forget you have Ohio's wine country up there in Ashtabua. Um, with uh um, oh, Geneva on the lake. Okay. Um, that is another great little spot where you can just bebop from winery to winery. This is in um, this is in, oh no, I'm gonna, it's it's Geneva on the lake is actually where it is. What is that near Cleveland? It's up Cleveland. It's it's about probably 40, 45 minutes north of Cleveland. If you're keeping going up, like you're going up to go to like New York, kind of you're kind of in that north um eastern section of Ohio. So we have a whole wine scene up there. Yeah, there's a nice little wine scene up there, and that there's tons of great little getaways, um, like great little cabins to rent. I mean, that um Geneva on the lake actually has a beautiful hotel right on the lake, all right, which is gorgeous. So I highly recommend that as well. So that's a great one to escape to.

Yeah, and I feel like Ohio does have kind of a wine scene that's not really looked upon as the true wine scene because we're not California and that. But I, you know, even locally we have some some people doing fun wine situations around here, you know?

Absolutely. I was gonna say, if you dig a little deeper, you'll find that we actually have a decent wine scene. Um, one winery that surprises me though is actually out in Indiana. Okay. They're called Pilgrim's Pilgrim, Pilgrimage Winery. Okay. And it's in Cambridge City. And I stumbled across them. If you like dry wine, it is the closest dry wine that I've found to like Europe. Okay. I mean, they do a phenomenal job. And like they have committed to growing grapes like the old European style.

And like they're very particular on how they create their wines and stuff. And it is good. It is good wine. And I would probably say my top winery in the Midwest. Oh, well. So I'm here. And that's, I mean, it is only an hour and change outside of Cincinnati. It's worth a great day trip if you're looking to go. And then there's if you're in Cambridge City too and you like antiques, it's called Antique Alley out there. So there's tons of antique malls and antique stores. So go get your little wine, go antiquing. There's tons of little like eateries and boutiques and bakeries, all kind of out there, because it's just small town, small town charm. And that's a little hidden gym out there that I'll throw out.

I got it corrected because I incorrect case cactuses and it's cacti. Um, this is a little bit north of Columbus. So you're looking about maybe a half hour, 40 minutes north of Columbus. Um and this is this huge plant ranch. I mean, literally it's a ranch, and they have so much unique plants, rare plants. Um, just I mean, as you everywhere you go, it's just where like you know, like greenhouse after after greenhouse of just unique plants. And there's so many succulents and cacti. And if you want one of those, like you see the cacti when you're like walking through Crone Conservatory, and you're like, look at that big barrel cactus, and you're like, I wish I had one. Well, you can. Oh my gosh. You go up there and you can buy one. So it is a it's a it's a shop, basically a nursery. A nursery for oh my gosh, it's a nursery, but it is, they have totally how did you stumble upon this place? I have no idea. Sometimes I don't even know how I find these places. And honestly, a lot of times I find them because other followers have said, have you been here yet? That's always you're in the area, check this out next time. And people don't realize I write those down. Yeah, for sure. When you recommend, when people say, When you're here, check this out next time, I'm writing all of that down in my little binders. Yes. So when I am in the area next time, I probably will check it out if it has time, or I'm gonna make it a point to make it a destination. And that's what I did with the groovy plant ranch. That is so cute. My sister lives in Mansfield, Ohio, up by the prison and uh, you know, all that good stuff. So when I posted something about that, someone's like, Oh, you're so close to the Groovy Plant Ranch, you should definitely check that out. And I'm like, I will check that out, and I did, and now I will be going back every time I go up to my sister's because I have a plant problem and I can't help it.

You got the silent night chapel up there, it gets decorated, and then you're just in like an old Bavarian town. Um, that's really cute. But if you are looking for a great weekend getaway, you need to go to the Carmel Chris Kendall Mart in Indiana.

Like, yeah, they have some fun, like little Christmas dangs, but it is not a destination that I would recommend people going to at Christmas.

So, I mean, so so this has been a thing lately. The last couple of years, I've had friends that have gone to Germany for the for the big market. And I know we do it down here. Cincinnati Moor line is trying to get that going. They're trying there to get there. He's trying and he's getting it. I mean, it's getting closer every year in summer. And Chicago, I know, does a huge big one in the city. Um, and people say it's super cool in Germany. But if this is close, this is saving you an airfare.

It's saving you an airfare. And the glue vine is amazing. What is it? The glue vine, the warm wine that they sell. You just in your little poop. I just drink it. Glue vine. Yeah, it's glue vine. And when you go to caramel, they have like tons of different flavors. So you go to the pyramid. So the pyramid is this, it looks like um, if you um have ever seen like the it looks like a windmill at the top. Yep. And um, a lot of times people put candles on them and make them. I know exactly what you're talking about. Yep. So that's a Christmas pyramid, and but they have it there, but that's where they serve the glue vine, and it's huge. You can't miss it, and it's lit up. And then they have all the different booths, they have ice skating. Um, but I mean, you can get your and you gotta get the raclet. I mean, oh yes, yes. I do know that. I mean, if she did you even go to the market if you didn't get the raclette.

Meaning you can literally. Oh, you need to book it now. That's what I was getting ready to say. Okay. You need to book it in July. Be able to be, because you literally walk out to the market. Oh, um, you do not, which is nice, you don't have to drive. Um, if you get cold, you can hop right back into um the hotel. It is beautiful. It is it is a luxury hotel. So you were gonna be spending luxury pricing. Just know that. Okay. Going in, you're talking four or five hundred a night, depending on when you're going, but you cannot beat the location. Okay. Um, and quite honestly, you can't beat the service, and the hotel is just stunning. Um, I would 100% recommend that. You're by the cake bake shop too. Literally, you can walk to the cake bake shop from the hotel carry. So, what's that's good, an amazing place to visit any season. Okay, I've heard about that.

So, and then that's like you you can't go after Christmas. Right. So it's but that's how those are traditional. So, but it's it's so nice. And if you go to Carmel, you also have other options too, which book ahead. They have Christmas train rides. Um, you can ride, like they have um one for adults, they have like a wine um Christmas train, right? They have blitz in like with Santa and Santa's cookies and the trains decked out, and um, that's up in Noblesville, which is only like they also do, but I think they closed down for a little bit.

They were redoing something because they had like a book night, a book ride, I think. And I went to book that. Did you went to book it? They were saying they're doing repairs or something. I was so heartbroken because my sisters and I were gonna go because they had and it looked so cute. Just you just bring on books and you have cocktails and you are on a train. I don't know why that intrigued me so much. It looks so relaxing and cute.

Yes, because that did look, I was wondering if that was the same train ride. So, any um anything around the city that you think is I mean, you know, you and I kind of do a lot around the city. I was gonna say, I feel like you're not gonna be. I know we have so many good fun gems um that you do. Oh, you know, you know, our museum center and crunch conservatory and our libraries do fun stuff. I think we are even at the library that's telling me for not traveling. Yes, and I think they're doing free, like free movies at Kenwood and the Esquire during the summer for kids. I just feel like I keep finding things that I don't think were were happening when my kids were little at all.

Um my mom says the same thing. She's like, where was all this? Yeah, you were growing up. And it's true. Um, so many places, like so many people just doing movie nights on the lawn. Yeah. Like you sit there and see that, or just free, fun kids festivals. And there's so much to do. I mean, it's just, I mean, I feel like every time I go look, there's something like I have not realized. Like fitness, there's so much fun fitness events happening around your city that are free, like up at Summit Park. Summit Park, Washington Park, I was mailing everywhere. There's just free things going on that mean, and you got, of course, the um splash pads are now in full gray. They're just looking to cool off.

I love it. Um, tons of live music. I mean, I just hunger time. There nobody can say that Cincinnati is boring in the summer. No, I do have weekend things to do, and I literally have to like edit it to fit Instagram.

I mean, I'm happy to give you the behind the scenes of like my daughter who is insisting on this beautiful room we're staying at when we're in Vegas. I'm sleeping in the closet. Oh my gosh. Because she made it a stuffed animal sanctuary for her stuffed animal that came with us. You're creating a monster. I know. So she's like, I want to sit here and the the bear's sleeping on the ironing board. And I'm like, we have a bed. Oh my goodness. We have bed, girl. It's just like always something. Um, whether it's um, and then we also have the travel mishaps too. Like people are sick. Like, I was just sick this whole trip to the holiday world.

We didn't bring a stroller.

No amount of booze is keeping me here. I need to leave. And so hilarious. So at we we lasted probably about five hours at Dollywood before we uh threw the talent because I was not prepared. And then so when I talk about funny travel stories, I have them for everybody. I'm sure you should do a blooper, a blooper reel. I should do a blooper reel of my daughter trying to sleep in a closet. And you know, I mean, unfortunately, we've also dealt with the sad sickness too of traveling with kids and and with ourselves. Like my number one travel companion is Pepto. You better have Pepto in your bag. Okay, good, good trim. I love it. If you're cruising, because uh fun fact, you can't buy Pepto on a cruise. You found out the hard way. The hard way, real hard. Because you know why? They want you to go report to the ship doctor.

So we um probably because they were trying stuff they've never tried because it was part of the gig. No, we probably caught whatever nasty stomach virus was going around and we've got to be. 100% they do a great job. And like we've cruised Disney, Princess, Rewar, we've done, and everyone, they're doing the best they can. Yes. I feel like no one has like gone like this is filthy. I was gonna say, we've been a couple. I would recommend if people are prone to tummy issues, like with food and stuff, where you don't want to have to resort going to the ship doctor, bring your Pepto. Death Valley, I would say in California. I would see that. I just when you you don't realize how small you are in this universe until you get to witness something as beautiful as one of our state parks. And Death Valley has a way of doing that, of showing you a couple different things. One that life can still survive through hardships and everything in this like desert community, like desert place, how people can make it through all of these incredible hardships. And like you're reading the stories of people and how it got called Death Valley and how like it was a borax mining community. And I'm like, how do people survive all of this? Um, but also just the great beauty just makes you take a step back and just appreciate life for what it is, no matter what stage of life you are in. You're just like, wow, how lucky am I to be here in this moment and um to be able to get to experience that, um, especially stargazing out there because it's completely pitch black. So you see everything, and it is one of the most remarkable experiences.

I mean, that was so good. If you really want to like, I mean, to me, travel will change you in many ways each time. You go into the small villages of Costa Rica where you see, you know, you can see poverty and and at its uh and people who still find joy and you're sit in life, and you're just surrounded by this beautiful nature, and you just it changes you. It changes you when you're sitting at a bar in Portro Puerto Rico and you're just like talking to like the local elders, and people are just telling you their life stories, and it just makes you appreciate their lifestyle, their way of life, their thought process. Um, you know, you're sitting in a you know in the mosque in Istanbul, Istanbul, Turkey, and you're like, this is a different religion than maybe I practice, and you appreciate that, and you sit there and you it makes you just it expands your mind in ways that you can never imagine.

I agree. I think travel, big or small, you know, like we were giving ideas, like you know, two hours away, three hours away, or across the world. Travel is just is so cool to learn different people and cultures and like you said, religions and food and all the things. So take time to travel and like yeah, I love all these ideas that aren't don't have to be so expensive and that families can do around the area. Um travel's amazing. Oh, it just opens up your mind to adventure everything.

In your own backyard. And like, I mean, you sit there and you go into some of these, like even in like the small towns you walk into and you're like in a local area, you get those locals talking. Yes, they so you never know where that's gonna lead you. Like, I mean, we were in Amish country once, and the lady brought us in, showed us how she made her thing, gave me a handwritten recipe for one of her um I love that for I mean, for one of her like famous like cakes that she makes and stuff. Like those are the moments that will change you, but you have to be open to it. You have to be willing to have those conversations with people. You have to be willing to put yourself somewhere that you might not be comfortable. Like, you know, like wow, I'm not, you know, I don't know if I want to sit at the bar today with like in a spot I don't know. But then you might end up meeting some pretty incredible people or strike up that conversation with that shop owner that you're strolling through. Yes. Um, you never know what you might learn. Absolutely. I totally say it's as you're wandering in and out, you like you meet some pretty amazing people. Tour guides are great. You dive into them, and then don't forget if you're on tours with people, talk to them too. Right. You guys tell a lot about just different areas. Um, when we were ziplining in the mega caverns, there was a couple from Idaho, and they gave me a list of things I need to go see in Idaho. And then you're like, Idaho's on my list, and now I know I'm gonna zip line through this cannon. I'm gonna go do this. Um, but stuff I would have never known if I had just kind of kept to myself and been quiet instead of just saying, like, so where are you guys from? Um, you never know where those conversations are gonna lead or who you're gonna meet.
